Vehicles and Fuel Standards

Fuel and vehicle standards are generally set nationally by agreement between Environment and Transport Ministers. Some standards are specifically designed to reduce air pollution.

There are allowable variations in fuel standards between States to address local air quality issues. South Australian fuel standards are set by the South Australian Environment Protection Authority.

National Environmental Protection Measures (NEPMs) are a further means of addressing environmental issues. NEPMs may include legally prescribed standards and/or a range of agreed strategies from which States and Territories can choose to suit local requirements.

Visit the National Environment Protection and Heritage Council website for information about the NEPMs for Ambient Air Quality and Diesel Vehicle Emissions, new vehicle emission standards and the work of the Motor Vehicle Environment Committee. Environment Australia also has a factsheet on the ambient air quality NEPM.

'Information on Vehicle Emission Standards can be found on the National Transport Commission site.
