Enhanced Greenhouse Effect

The greenhouse effect is a natural process. Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere trap the sun's warmth, raising the temperature on earth. Without the greenhouse effect, the earth would be too cold for human habitation.

Most greenhouse gases have natural as well as human-made sources, and there are natural mechanisms for removing them from the atmosphere.

However, human activities are increasing the atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases, and more gas is being emitted than is being absorbed naturally each year. This overload of gases is leading to global warming and climate change.

For further information on greenhouse and Australia’s commitment to emission targets visit the Australian Greenhouse Office website.
