Alternative Fuels

Using fuels other than diesel or petrol can reduce or change the emissions from vehicles.

Transport SA is responsible for the purchase of the metropolitan bus fleet. With the assistance of the Australian Greenhouse Office, we have increased the number of buses powered by gas. Over 25% of the fleet are now Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses - see: Greening the bus fleet topic.

Transport SA has a number of fleet vehicles that run on alternative fuels

  • a hybrid vehicle (part petrol/part electric)
  • natural gas vehicles
  • a Green Transporter for staff transport.

Vehicle and fuel standards also contribute to the type and quality of emissions.
