Environment
Transport is essential to the economic and social functioning of
our communities but vehicle use and transport infrastructure can
have negative impacts on our environment, communities and people.
The department aims to provide a transport system for South Australians
that is efficient, safe and environmentally sustainable.
The following links give you more information about how transport
systems affect the environment and how the department manages the
impacts.
- Air Quality & Greenhouse
One of the department’s key priorities is to enhance our capacity
to reduce emissions from the transport system. Emissions from
transport contribute greenhouse gases towards the global enhanced
greenhouse effect.
- Biodiversity & Land Management
Loss of biodiversity is recognised as Australia’s most serious
environmental problem both on land and in our seas. The department aims to protect native vegetation and significant vegetation
during construction, maintenance and operation of the transport
system.
- Environmental Management at the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure
Processes for managing and improving our environmental performance
are integrated into the way in which we in the department go about
our business.
