Workzone Traffic Management Frequently Asked Questions

What is Workzone Traffic Management?

Road workers everywhere, everyday face all sorts of hazards as they go about their day-to-day business. These hazards can range from the movement of plant and machinery in and around the work site, to road users travelling past the temporary signs and devices displayed.

Workzone Traffic Management involves the management of traffic through, around and past road works whilst balancing the safety needs of both workers and road users such as drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.

Who needs to be trained in Workzone Traffic Management?

The Workzone Traffic Management Training course is aimed at road workers require training and retraining in the correct type, placement and size of temporary traffic control devices used at roadworks.

It is a legal requirement (Road Traffic Act, 1961) for persons working on, along or across any road pavement or shoulder or adjacent to a road under DPTI control, or near roads in South Australia to be trained in the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure’s Workzone Traffic Management Training Program. At all times whilst workers are present at a site at least one worker must be trained.

What Workzone Traffic Management Training courses are available?

Three types of Workzone Traffic Management Training courses are available in South Australia.

Training Course Audience
Workzone Traffic Management Anyone who wants to work on, near or adjacent to roads.
Workzone Traffic Management – Bridging Course for South Australia Anyone with interstate qualifications. Covers Workzone Traffic Management differences in South Australia.
Workzone Traffic Management – Refresher Course Some of the approved Training Providers also offer a group refresher course as an alternative to the annual Road to Worker Safety refresher CD-ROM training.

What is covered in the Workzone Traffic Management Training course?

The Workzone Traffic Management Training is a competency based course that provides participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to:

  • identify hazards associated with work sites requiring traffic management,
  • assess the level of risk to employees and the public, and
  • implement appropriate worksite traffic management schemes based on State legislation, Australian Standard 1742 Part 3, and the Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare Act, 1986 and Regulations.

The course ensures that workers, supervisors and other operational personnel who undertake work on roads and road related areas within South Australia are aware of their responsibilities and legal obligations. After successful completion of the course, these personnel will be aware of the traffic control devices and methods that are available and how to use them to provide a safe working environment for themselves and other road users.

What are the pre-requisites for Workzone Traffic Management Training?

All Workzone Traffic Management courses in South Australia require adequate literacy skills. In addition, the following pre-requisites apply:

Training Course Pre-requisites
Workzone Traffic Management Nil. No minimum or maximum age limits apply.
Workzone Traffic Management – Bridging Course for South Australia Interstate training certificate or statement of attainment equivalent to the units of competency in the South Australian Workzone Traffic Management Training course.
Workzone Traffic Management – Refresher Course Successful completion of the Workzone Traffic Management Training course. Must hold a current Workzone Traffic Management card that has not yet expired.

What do I do when my Workzone Traffic Management card expires?

All South Australian Workzone Traffic Management cards are valid for five years from the date of successful completion of training. Cards produced in more recent years display a ‘Renewal Date’.

If your card has expired, you will need to requalify by completing the full Workzone Traffic Management Training course or by recognition of prior learning. Recognition of prior learning requires evidence of workzone traffic management experience gained since completing the course. Recognition of prior learning is at the discretion of the approved Training Provider. Please contact the approved Training Providers directly for further information.

What do I do if I have not received my Workzone Traffic Management card?

At the successful completion of your Workzone Traffic Management Training course the approved Training Provider will provide you with a Statement of Attainment for the relevant units of competency. This Statement of Attainment is evidence of your qualification until you receive your Workzone Traffic Management card.

Approximately four to eight weeks after successfully completing the Workzone Traffic Management Training course, the approved Training Provider will provide you with a credit-card sized Workzone Traffic Management card. If you have not received your card within this timeframe, please contact the Traffic and Access Standards Section of the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure on 08 8343 2214 or email dtei.roadworkersafety@sa.gov.au for assistance.

Are Workzone Traffic Management cards from interstate recognised in South Australia?

Interstate Workzone Traffic Management training cards, certificates and statements of attainment equivalent to the units of competency in the South Australian Workzone Traffic Management Training course may be recognised in this State in conjunction with successful completion of the bridging course. The bridging course covers the differences in Workzone Traffic Management in South Australia compared with interstate. What is ‘The Road to Worker Safety’ annual refresher training CD-ROM?

The Road to Worker Safety CD-ROM contains 41 modules covering topics from legislation, short and long term worksites, frequently changing work areas, roadwork speed limits, speed limit buffer zones and pedestrian control.

Each module contains high quality video footage followed by a series of multiple-choice questions. Once all questions have been correctly answered the trainee automatically moves to the next module. A certificate is generated at the successful completion of the CD-ROM.

All modules have been aligned to Australian Standard 1742 Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices, Part 3 Traffic Control Devices for Works on Roads, as well as South Australian legislation and policy.

How do I order ‘The Road to Worker Safety’ annual refresher training CD-ROM?

The Road to Worker Safety CD-ROM is a fully interactive training tool that can be used individually or in a group. It has been designed to complement the Workzone Traffic Management Training course through annual refresher training delivered to individuals, for distance learning or delivered centrally through a wide or local area network.

In line with statutory requirements, any person working on or near a road in South Australia must complete ‘The Road to Workers Safety’ CD-ROM annually.

What is the ‘Field Guide’?

DPTI has developed a new field guide, (traffic control devices for workzone traffic management) which incorporates the requirements of AS 1742.3 (fourth edition 2009) and the state regulations.

The new field guide includes more than 70 illustrated colour figures to assist the users in the preparation of WZTM plans intended for use on or adjacent roads within South Australia.

How do I purchase the Field guide for workzone traffic management?

The field guide is provided as a part of the Workzone Traffic Management Training Program by the training provider.

The field guides are produced as hard copies currently and there is no provision to obtain an electronic copy of the guide.

Why is there no suitable diagram/figure in the guide which suits my scenario?

The figures are not an exhaustive list to cover all scenarios, the figures are developed to cover most of he situations and is produced as a guide. You can adopt relevant figure/s to the scenarios you need to work with.

If additional scenarios are identified and the existing diagrams doesn’t provide sufficient information to adopt to your situation, forward the appropriate diagram and the reason for it to be included in the field guide to DTEI.roadworksafety@sa.gov.au
